Spark alternatives for Mac: email apps compared
Updated October 2026
Spark is a capable email app with a free plan, a unified inbox, snooze and send later, on Mac, iPhone, Android and Windows. People look elsewhere because of its 2022 redesign, upgrade prompts, AI features they didn't ask for, and features that run on Spark's servers. The closest alternative is Canary, which also has a free plan. Apple Mail is free with every Mac, Airmail and Outlook cover most accounts, and Mimestream and Lambda Mail are made for Gmail.
What Spark does well
- Many accounts, one inbox: the free plan has unlimited accounts, a Smart Inbox that sorts people from newsletters and notifications, and smart notifications.
- The everyday tools: snooze, send later up to six months ahead, and Gatekeeper, which screens new senders before they reach your inbox.
- Teams: shared drafts, shared threads, comments and delegation.
- Everywhere: one subscription works on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows.
Most people who review it are happy: 80 of its 100 most recent US App Store reviews, from late August to October 2026, gave it four or five stars.
Why people look elsewhere
- The redesign: in 2022 Spark rebuilt its Mac app on Electron, a framework for apps made from web code, and moved to subscriptions. Some long-time users still ask for the old Spark in 2026 reviews.
- Price and prompts: Plus costs $99 a year and Pro $199 a year. In 2023, its Premium plan was $59.99 a year. Reviewers mention frequent upgrade prompts.
- AI everywhere: Spark +AI, an AI assistant, meeting notes and AI-written drafts are the main things the paid plans add. Some people would rather not see them.
- Servers: Spark keeps a token for your login on its servers, and handles mail you send later or share there. Its policy lists what it keeps and for how long; our guide Which Mac email apps keep your mail on their servers? has the details.
- Bugs: recent reviews mention slow search and freezes.

|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Mail | Free with every Mac | Any | Every account in one free app, with send later and undo send built in |

Before you leave Spark
- Send what's waiting. Emails in Send Later wait on Spark's servers and won't go out once Spark is gone from all your devices, so send them or set them up again in your new app.
- Your mail stays put. Removing an account from Spark doesn't delete any email: it stays with your provider, and your new app downloads it again.
- Remove your data. On a Mac, open Spark's settings and choose Remove your data. For a copy of your data, or a deletion request under GDPR or CCPA, Spark's help page gives the address to write to.
- Cancel the subscription. Spark ends a subscription bought directly from Spark when you remove your data. One bought through the App Store you cancel yourself, in your Apple account's subscriptions.
- Revoke its access. For Gmail, open your Google Account's third-party connections and remove Spark.
Where Lambda Mail fits
We make Lambda Mail, so take this as our side of the story, kept to facts. It isn't a replacement for everything Spark does: it works with Gmail and Google Workspace only, and it has no unified inbox, snooze, send later, templates or team features. If you need those, Canary or Apple Mail is closer. What it does instead:
- A native Mac app: built with Apple's own tools, with the Mac's menus, shortcuts, Quick Look and notifications.
- Gmail as Gmail: labels you can color, archive that works, Gmail's search, and several accounts, each with its own mailboxes and signature.
- Made your way: seven themes, every color for light and dark, four fonts, three densities, text size and a Liquid Glass sidebar.
- Attachments at the bottom: files you drop into a message wait in a tray below it, never between your lines.
- No servers and no AI: your mail goes from Google to your Mac, and your login stays in your Keychain. There's no Lambda account to create.
Lambda Mail works on macOS 14 and later, and the beta is free.
