How to unsubscribe from emails on Mac and in Gmail

Updated November 2026

In Gmail on the web, open the email and click Unsubscribe next to the sender's name, or click More, then Manage subscriptions, in the sidebar to see your newsletters with a button for each. In Apple Mail, a banner under the header of a mailing list message has an Unsubscribe button. Use these only for mail you signed up for. For spam, click Report spam in Gmail or Junk in Apple Mail instead. Either way, a sender can take a few days to stop.

In Gmail

From one email

  1. Open Gmail in your browser and open an email from the sender.
  2. Next to the sender's name, click Unsubscribe.
  3. In the window that opens, click Unsubscribe. If it says Go to website instead, the sender wants you to finish on its own site.

Gmail shows the link only for mail that passes Google's own checks, so it's often missing. Then use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Unsubscribing from one email may remove you from only one of the sender's lists.

From every newsletter at once

Gmail's Manage subscriptions page, added in July 2025, lists the senders you're subscribed to, with how many emails each one sent you recently. To open it on a computer, click More in the left sidebar, then Manage subscriptions. Click Unsubscribe next to a sender, and Gmail unsubscribes you from all of that sender's lists. Anything the sender still sends goes to Spam, and Report not spam brings it back. Google says the page is still rolling out, so you may not have it yet.

In Apple Mail on a Mac

  1. Select a message from the mailing list.
  2. A banner below the message header says the message is from a mailing list. Click Unsubscribe in the banner.
  3. Click OK in the alert. The banner goes away, and Mail unsubscribes you.

Apple Mail has no list of all your subscriptions, so you unsubscribe one email at a time. Two other tools are close by, but neither one unsubscribes you:

When not to click Unsubscribe

Unsubscribe is for mail you signed up for, from a sender you recognize. Google says the same: for anything else, report it as spam. If you don't know the sender, or the email looks like a scam, don't click any link in it, Unsubscribe included. Security experts warn that answering spam can tell the sender your address works. Click Report spam in Gmail, or Junk in Apple Mail, and delete it.

How long it takes

If a sender doesn't stop

Filters, blocks and rules hide the mail on your side. The sender doesn't know and keeps sending.

Unsubscribe services

Services that unsubscribe you in bulk work by getting access to your mailbox, so they can find every mailing list in it. Read what each one keeps, and for how long, before you sign in. In 2019 the FTC settled with Unrollme, saying it had told some users it wouldn't touch their personal email while it shared their e-receipts with its parent company.

Where Lambda Mail fits

We make Lambda Mail, a Mac app for Gmail, so take this as our side of the story, kept to facts. It does the unsubscribing for you, on your Mac:

A Pegboard Weekly newsletter open in Lambda Mail, with the alert that clicking Unsubscribe brings up: Unsubscribe from Pegboard Weekly? Lambda asks pegboardweekly.com to stop sending you these emails. Nothing else is sent. The pointer rests on the alert's Unsubscribe button.

Lambda Mail works with Gmail and Google Workspace on macOS 14 and later, and the beta is free.
